Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the prestigious cup on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

However, Marseille fired two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
