RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
