From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.

“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure

But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement

Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
